Swimmers Compete Well at TAPPS State Meet with Jones Setting State Record

February 16, 2017

CCS took eight swimmers to the state swim meet in San Antonio. They participated in four relays and six individual events. As a team, they turned in their fastest times of the season and had great finishes in several events.

The highlight of the meet was freshman Elliott Jones' wall-to-wall victory in the 100-yard backstroke that set a new TAPPS state record with a time of 53.12. Elliott also finished fourth in the 200 Individual Medley with an outstanding time of 1:58.68. During the state meet, Elliott was presented with the boys Regional Swimmer of the Meet Award for the TAPPS East Texas Region. Collin Tate also competed in an individual boys event finishing 14th in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26.38.

Allison Thompson and Campbell Fox swam individual events for the girls. Allison finished fourth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26.36 and 12th in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 59.97. Campbell Fox dropped over three seconds for her 100-yard breaststroke to finish 14th with a time of 1:28.98.

The girls relay team (Campbell Fox, Molly Mitton, Samantha Swan and Allison Thompson) dropped over four seconds in the 200-free relay and almost two seconds in the medley relay. They finished fifth with at time of 1:56.86 in the free relay and seventh with a time of 2:16.94 in the medley relay.

The boys relay team (Elliott Jones, Ian Jones, Cullen Spadachene and Collin Tate) finished fifth in the 200-medley relay but got disqualified for leaving early in an exchange by just five hundredth of a second. They did drop over three seconds and finish seventh with a time of 1:48.08 in the 200-yard free relay.

Forty schools were represented at the Division III Championships, and in combined scores for the boys and girls, CCS finished ninth. This is a tremendous finish for such a small team. The swim team did not include any seniors so they have a great opportunity to return to state and improve on their times next season.
